Caçapa (born May 29, 1976 in Lavras , Brazil ; real name Claudio Roberto da Silva ) is a former Brazilian soccer player . Since October 5, 2006, he has both Brazilian and French citizenship.

Player career

The central defender Caçapa began his professional career in 1997 at Atlético Mineiro in Brazil. Before moving to Europe during the winter break of 2000/01, he played 68 games in the 1st Brazilian league , scoring two goals. Then he came to France to Olympique Lyon , where he had his first appearance on February 17, 2001 in the Division 1 game against FC Toulouse . For Lyon, Caçapa played 125 Ligue 1 appearances in which he scored seven goals, plus a total of 18 games in national cup competitions. He was featured 29 times in the European Cup (including 27 in the UEFA Champions League and two in the UEFA Cup ), but has not yet scored a goal. In the summer of 2007 he moved to the Premier League club Newcastle United on a free transfer . There he was a regular before he was often sidelined due to injuries and was only used occasionally. In August 2009 he left the club to join Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte . He returned to Europe in early 2011 and joined FC Évian Thonon Gaillard in French Ligue 2 . At the end of the 2010/11 season he achieved promotion with his team. After half a year with Avaí FC in Brazil, he retired in 2011.

National team

Caçapa has been used four times in the Brazilian national team .

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, Caçapa initially worked as a coach for the Brazilian U-15 national team . In early 2016 he became Bruno Génésio's assistant coach at Olympique Lyon .
