The Stade Grimonprez-Jooris was a football stadium in the northern French city of Lille . The Lille OSC played in the stadium from the opening to the closing in 2004. It is named after the French hockey player Félix Grimonprez (1910-1940) and the sports official Henri Jooris . The association wanted to keep the old name; the mayor at the time wanted Grimonprez. A compromise of the double name was then agreed.

history

After the old Stade Henri-Jooris  - the venue for the 1938 World Cup  - was demolished; In 1974 the new stadium was built just a few meters from the old location. At that time it offered 25,000 places. On October 28, 1975 the arena was opened with the game Lille OSC against Feyenoord Rotterdam (1: 1). In the first league game a few days later on November 3, OSC and AS Nancy (1: 2) met.

The stadium has three covered stands; the fourth audience tier was no longer covered. Due to the change in safety regulations, the capacity has been reduced to 17,000 seats. The conversion from standing to sitting was particularly responsible for this. During the renovation in 2000, a spectator rank was added to the uncovered grandstand and the capacity increased to the current number of 21,128 seats.

The Lille OSC took part in 2001 as third in the first division in qualifying for the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League . However, since the stadium did not meet UEFA regulations , the club had to move to the Stade Félix-Bollaert in Lens and the Stade de France, about 200 km away, for the European Cup matches . After the closure in 2004, Lille OSC played its league home games temporarily at the Nord Lille Métropole Stadium in Villeneuve-d'Ascq , until the Stade Pierre-Mauroy (initially: Grand Stade Lille Métropole ) in Villeneuve-d'Ascq was opened in August 2012 and the Club moved there.

New building

As the stadium was no longer up to date; It was decided to build a new arena. The mayor was in favor of renovating the old stadium. The club owners planned a new building outside the city with 60,000 seats. However, this project was not implemented. In June 2003, those involved agreed on a new building by architect Albert Konstantin with 33,003 seats to replace the old stadium. At the end of 2004 the venue with the name Stade Grimonprez-Jooris II should be completed.

The Dauphine Gate at the Citadel of Lille

Construction work should now begin in early 2005. But conservationists wanted to prevent this plan, as the old citadel of Lille borders directly on the stadium. Initially, the building permit was suspended and on December 28, 2005 the highest administrative court, the Conseil d'État , upheld the revocation of the building permits.

In January 2007, after disputes about the assumption of costs, it was decided to demolish the sports facility, which took place in 2010.

In December 2009, the building permit for a new stadium at a different location was signed. On March 26, 2010, construction began on the new Grand Stade Lille Métropole / Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Villeneuve-d'Ascq , which was then opened on August 17, 2012.
