Marie Amalie of Baden
Marie Amelie Elisabeth Karoline von Baden , also called Maria Amalia (born October 11, 1817 or 1818 in Karlsruhe , † October 8 or October 18, 1888 in Baden-Baden ) was a Baden princess and by marriage Duchess of Hamilton .
Life
Princess Marie Amalie was born on October 11, 1817 (according to another source, 1818) as the youngest child of Grand Duke Karl von Baden and his wife Stéphanie de Beauharnais , Napoleon's adopted daughter ; her older surviving siblings were Luise and Josephine .
Marie Amalie herself referred to Kaspar Hauser , who is said to have looked like her, as her brother; their controversial statement gave supporters of the hereditary prince theory further popularity.
On February 23, 1843, Marie Amalie married in Mannheim the Scottish nobleman William Hamilton, Marquess of Douglas , son and heir of Alexander Hamilton, 10th Duke of Hamilton . The marriage gave her the courtesy title of Marchioness of Douglas . The marriage had three children. The family lived at Brodick Castle on the Isle of Arran , later at Hamilton Palace near the city of Hamilton . In 1852, after the death of his father, Marie's husband William became 11th Duke of Hamilton, and she herself received the courtesy title of Duchess of Hamilton . In 1855 she converted to the Roman Catholic faith . After the death of her husband in 1863, she returned to her homeland, where she died in Baden-Baden in October 1888.
