Carl Geigy

Carl Geigy (born June 24, 1860 in Steinen im Wiesental ; † January 3, 1943 in Münchenstein ; also Karl ) was a Swiss mechanical engineer and benefactor .

Life

Geigy was the son of the Basel factory owner Carl (1834–1862) and Margaretha Emilie Burckhardt (1838–1911). His grandfather was Karl Geigy (1798–1861), president of the board of directors of the Centralbahngesellschaft. Carl Geigy grew up in Basel and attended high school and trade school there.

Bruckgut Münchenstein

He was trained as a mechanical engineer in Lausanne and attended the weaving and dyeing school in Bradford, England, and a spinning machine factory in Oldham, where he got to know the social problems of the workforce. After traveling around the world, he returned to Switzerland in 1887. He was a co-founder of the engineering company Basel. In 1904 he retired from professional life.

Carl Geigy lived on the Bruckgut in Münchenstein, where in 1888 he had the "Bruckgut" farm built. In 1897 he married Julia Elisabeth Burckhardt (1872–1949) from Basel. They had four children, Eduard (1899–1941), Julie (1900–1966), Jenny (1903–1990) and Karl Felix (1904–1977).

After retiring from his job, he devoted himself to social, humanitarian and religious tasks. He was heavily involved in the construction of the Basel Children's Hospital. He was a benefactor and was considered a "father of the country". He was made an honorary citizen in Münchenstein in 1937 .
