Alexander Hamilton, 10th Duke of Hamilton (born October 3, 1767 in London , † August 18, 1852 ibid) was a Scottish nobleman , politician and diplomat.

Life

Alexander Hamilton was the son of Archibald Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton and his wife Harriet Stewart of Galloway. He followed his father in 1819 as the 10th Duke of Hamilton . Alexander was educated at Harrow and Oxford University . In 1802 he became a Member of the House of Commons for Lancashire and Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire . From 1806 to 1807 he was the successor to William Cathcart, British ambassador to Russia and then a member of the Privy Council . From 1820 to 1822 he was also the Grand Master of the Freemasons In scotland.

Hamilton was a well-known dandy. Through debt he sold a large part of the extensive family library, including the well-known Hamilton Bible . His extraordinary interest in mummies went so far that he had his own corpse mummified by the expert Thomas Pettigrew after his death. He was buried on his Scottish estate at Hamilton Palace.

The Duke had been married to Susan Euphemia (1786-1859), daughter of William Beckford , with whom he had two children, since 1810 :
