Sir Henry Raeburn (born March 4, 1756 in Stockbridge near Edinburgh , † July 8, 1823 in Edinburgh) was a Scottish portrait painter of the Romantic period . Alongside Sir David Wilkie, Raeburn is considered to be the founder of the Scottish School of Painting .

Life

Henry Raeburn studied at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh, founded in 1628 by the royal goldsmith George Heriot . At the age of 15 he trained as a goldsmith, soon turned to engraving and became one of Edinburgh's most important portrait painters.

Reverend Robert Walker ice skating , oil on canvas, 1790s. This famous picture is unsigned, the traditional attribution to Raeburn has meanwhile been questioned

At twenty-four, Henry Raeburn married Count Leslie's rich widow, Ann Edgar, who was eleven years his senior. Their financial means enabled him to study in London (1784) under Sir Joshua Reynolds , the leading portraitist of his time, and a two-year stay in Rome between 1784 and 1786. The trip was artistically significant, and the influence of the works of Pompeo Batoni , Gavin Hamilton, and Giovanni Romanelli made themselves felt in much later portraits. Raeburn was particularly fascinated by observing the effects of light.

Sir Henry Raeburn, knighted by King George IV in 1822 and named “ His Majesty's Limner for Scotland” , had an ambivalent relationship with England throughout his life . In 1810 he considered moving to London and then staying in Edinburgh. He regularly sent his works to the Royal Academy of Arts , where he also became a full academician in 1815. In 1820 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .
