Archibald Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton
Archibald Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton , 6th Duke of Brandon (born July 15, 1740 , † February 16, 1819 in Ashton Hall ) was a Scottish nobleman.
Life
Archibald Hamilton was the second-born son of James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton from his third marriage to Anne Spencer. He was educated at Eton College and was from 1768 to 1772 as Knight of the Shire for Lancashire member of the House of Commons . When his nephew Douglas Hamilton, 8th Duke of Hamilton , died in 1799 without male descendants, he inherited his nobility title as 9th Duke of Hamilton . He succeeded his nephew in the office of Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, but his life was more interested in horse racing than politics.
Marriage and offspring
Archibald married Lady Harriet Stewart (1750–1788), daughter of Alexander Stewart, 6th Earl of Galloway , in 1765, and had the following children with her:
- Lady Anne Hamilton († 1846);
- Alexander Hamilton, 10th Duke of Hamilton (1767-1852);
- Lord Archibald Hamilton (1769-1827), MP for Lanarkshire;
- Lady Charlotte Hamilton (1772–1827), ⚭ 1800 Edward Adolphus St. Maur, 11th Duke of Somerset ;
- Lady Susan Hamilton (1774–1846), ⚭ 1803 George Murray, 5th Earl of Dunmore .
