Earl of Dunmore is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

Award

The title was bestowed on August 16, 1686 to Lord Charles Murray , the second son of John Murray, 1st Marquess of Atholl . He served as a general in the British Army .

Subordinate title

Subordinate titles, also in the Peerage of Scotland, are Viscount of Fincastle and Lord Murray of Blair, Moulin and Tillimet . Both titles were awarded at the same time as earliest dignity.

The eldest son of the respective earl carries the courtesy title Viscount Fincastle as a probable title heir ( Heir Apparent ) .

Other titles

The 5th Earl was active as a politician. So that he got a permanent seat in the British House of Lords , he received on September 10, 1831 the dignity of Baron Dunmore , of Dunmore in the Forest of Atholl in the County of Perth , in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . This title expired in 1980 with the death of the 9th Earl.

As descendants of the 1st Marquess of Atholl, all Earls are subordinate to the title of Marquess of Atholl and its subordinate title.

The alleged heir to the title ( Heir Presumptive ) is the brother of the current Earl, Geoffrey Charles Murray (* 1949). The current earl's only son is adopted and therefore cannot inherit the title.
