Awards

The title was first created on July 11, 1619 in the Peerage of Ireland for Richard Preston, 1st Lord Dingwall . The award took place together with the parent Irish title Earl of Desmond . The earl had already been given the Scottish title of Lord Dingwall in 1609 . Since the Earl had no sons, his Irish title expired on his death on October 28, 1628, while the Lordship of Dingwall fell to his daughter Elizabeth Preston , wife of James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde from 1629 .

In the second bestowal, the title of Baron Dunmore , of Dunmore in the Forest of Atholl in the County of Perth , was bestowed on September 10, 1831 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to George Murray, 5th Earl of Dunmore . This already led the Scottish title Earl of Dunmore , created in 1686 , along with subordinate titles. This title gave the earl a seat in the British House of Lords . The barony expired in 1980 when the 9th Earl died. The remaining titles fell to his distant relative Reginald Murray as 10th Earl of Dunmore.
