Lord Dingwall
Lord Dingwall is a hereditary British title of nobility created twice in the Peerage of Scotland .
The title is named after the town of Dingwall or the local Dingwall Castle .
Award
The title was first awarded on March 15, 1584 to Sir Andrew Keith from Clan Keith . The title expired on his death around 1606.
The title was created a second time in 1609 for Sir Richard Preston. On July 11, 1619 he was also raised in the Peerage of Ireland to Baron Dunmore and Earl of Desmond . In contrast to the Scottish title, the Irish titles could only be passed on to male descendants, so they expired on his death in 1628, while the Lordship of Dingwall fell to his daughter Elizabeth . In 1629 she married James Butler , who later became the 1st Duke of Ormonde . Her son James therefore inherited the title of his father in addition to the Lordship Dingwall. After James took part in the Jacobite Rising of 1715 , however, his titles were stripped of him for high treason. In 1817, at the request of his descendant Francis Cowper , the title was restored for him as 4th Lord Dingwall (counting the interim de iure claimants on the title, he would be 10th Lord), as was the title of 3rd Baron, which was also revoked in 1715 Butler , created in 1666 in the Peerage of England . Francis Cowper had inherited the titles of Earl Cowper , Viscount Fordwich , in the County of Kent, both created in 1718 in the Peerage of Great Britain , and Baron Cowper of Wingham in the County of Kent, created in 1706 in the Peerage of England, in 1856. In 1880 he also inherited the title of Baron Lucas , of Crudwell in the County of Wiltshire, created in 1663 in the Peerage of England. On his death his titles from 1706 and 1718 expired, the title Baron Butler fell in Abeyance , the titles Baron Lucas and Lord Dingwall fell to his nephew Auberon Herbert as 9th Baron Lucas and 5th Lord Dingwall. The two titles are still united today.
