William Cowper, 1st Earl Cowper

Earl Cowper was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on March 18, 1718 by King George I for Lord Chancellor William Cowper, 1st Baron Cowper , together with the subordinate title Viscount Fordwich in the County of Kent .

As early as December 14, 1706 he had been awarded the title Baron Cowper , of Wingham in the County of Kent, in the Peerage of England . In 1723 he had inherited the title Cowper Baronet , of Ratling Court in the County of Kent, created on March 4, 1642 in the Baronetage of England from his father .

On July 31, 1871, the 7th Earl succeeded in having one of his ancestors revoked for treason in 1715: 4th Lord Dingwall (created in 1609 in the Peerage of Scotland) and 3rd Baron Butler of Moore Park (created in 1666 in the Peerage of England) were restored. In addition, in 1880 he inherited the title of 8th Baron Lucas , of Crudwell in the County of Wiltshire , from his mother , who was created in 1663 in the Peerage of England.

On the death of the 7th Earl, the titles Earl Cowper, Viscount Fordwich, Baron Cowper and Cowper Baronet expired. The title Baron Butler fell in Abeyance , the titles Baron Lucas and Lord Dingwall fell to his nephew Auberon Herbert as 9th Baron Lucas and 5th Lord Dingwall.
