Baron Lucas is a hereditary British title of nobility created twice in the Peerage of England .

Awards

For the first time the title of Baron Lucas , of Shenfield in the County of Essex was bestowed on January 3, 1645 by letters patent to Sir John Lucas . The award was made with the special addition that in the absence of male descendants of his own, the title could also be inherited by his nephew Charles Lucas, the son of his older brother Sir Thomas Lucas (1598–1649), and his male descendants. Charles followed him in 1671 as 2nd baron. The title expired when the 3rd Baron died on January 31, 1705.

In the second bestowal, the title of Baron Lucas , of Crudwell in the County of Wiltshire was created on May 7, 1663 for Mary Gray, Countess of Kent , daughter of the 1st Baron of the first bestowal, wife of Anthony Gray, 11th Earl of Kent . The title was awarded with the special addition that in the absence of male heirs it could be passed on to the eldest daughter (i.e. no Abeyance ). The 1st Baroness was inherited in 1702 by her son Henry Gray , who had already inherited the title of 12th Earl of Kent from his father and was raised to Marquess of Kent in 1706 , Duke of Kent in 1710 and Marquess Gray in 1740 . The Duke's eldest son, Anthony Gray, Earl of Harold , was appointed to Parliament in 1718 by writ of acceleration and thereby inherited the title of 3rd Baron Lucas prematurely. However, Anthony died childless in 1723, so that the title reverted to his father. At his death in 1723, the titles of Marquess Gray and Baron Lucas fell to his granddaughter Jemima Yorke , his other titles lapsed. The 8th Baron already held the titles of 7th Earl Cowper , 7th Viscount Fordwich , 7th Baron Cowper , 3rd Baron Butler , 4th Lord Dingwall and 9th Baronet (of Ratling Court). At his death in 1905, the title of Baron Butler fell in Abeyance, the titles of Baron Lucas and Lord Dingwall fell to his nephew Auberon Herbert and his other titles lapsed. The titles Baron Lucas and Lord Dingwall have remained united to this day.

Remarks

  1. In the literature, Anthony is sometimes not included in the ordinal number, so that the current baron is not listed as the 12th but as the 11th baron - e.g. B. at Debrett's Peerage and Baronetage .
