Marquess Gray

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marquess Gray was a hereditary British title of nobility from the Peerage of Great Britain .

The title was created on May 19, 1740 for Henry Gray, 1st Duke of Kent , with the special note that in the absence of male descendants, his granddaughter Jemima Campbell and her male descendants were entitled to inheritance. The Duke of Kent died just two weeks after being awarded the marquessate, voiding most of his other titles. The 2nd Marchioness married Philip Yorke, 2nd Earl of Hardwicke , but left behind only two daughters and no sons when she died on January 10, 1797, so the title became invalid.
