Geizhals price comparison is an online price comparison portal . The website is operated by Internet Services AG , an Austrian company based in Vienna, which has been part of the Heise Group since 2014 .

Market position

According to ÖWA , Geizhals had around 2.8 million unique clients in March 2018, making it one of the largest e-commerce platforms in German-speaking countries. In the Alexa rank , Geizhals.at is currently in 41st position in Austria (as of July 2019). Geizhals is represented with its services in Austria, Germany, Great Britain and Poland.

history

Geizhals was created in 1997 as a hobby project in the form of a comparative price overview for hardware dealers in the Vienna area, at that time still under the name of hardware price comparison . As its popularity grew and the number of merchants continued to grow, the website slowly took on a shape very similar to that of today.

In 1999 the founders of the Viennese internet provider inode gave the operator the domain geizhals.at , which quickly established the name as the first point of contact for price comparisons in Austria. As part of a sole proprietorship, the website generated its first income from advertising; participation for dealers was free of charge.

In June 2000, after several discussions initiated by investors, the Internet Services AG was founded together with the e-Matrix Online Business Development AG as a vehicle for the professionalization and commercialization of the price comparison, which had now also listed several retailers from Germany. The original operator and the investor e-Matrix , who brought in capital in the six-digit euro range, each held 50 percent of the new company . When the investor later left, the founder Marinos Yannikos acquired a majority of the shares. In October 2013, the German Heise Verlag took a 24 percent stake in Geizhals . In May 2014 Heise Verlag increased its shares to 75 percent. Heise now holds over 90% of Internet Services AG.

When the AG was founded , the first employees were hired and the Geizhals brand was registered in Austria. The attempt was unsuccessful to secure the domain of the same name in Germany. The then German Bargain Portal miser could a few months before the brand comparison , the back up and later domain in Germany, from 2003, it operated a competing price comparison for the German market and led geizhals.de to its site to. In early 2012 succeeded Preisvergleich Internet Services AG , the German domain geizhals.de and associated trademarks and related domains from competitors miser to acquire.

WIPO procedure

By means of an independent UN arbitration tribunal in the course of a so-called "WIPO procedure" , Geizhals tried to obtain the corresponding .com domain in 2005, which at that time was not obviously held by trademark owners in order to defuse the previous domain problems. This procedure went out to the detriment of Miser . Today (October 2018) the domain geizhals.com also belongs to geizhals.at.

internationalization

In 2009 Geizhals started an expansion into the UK market with the website skinflint.co.uk . A year later the foundation for the Polish branch cenowarka.pl was laid.

Heise group

In 2005 the Austrian price comparison Internet Services started a cooperation with the German publishing house Heise Zeitschriften Verlag , which soon began to display the data of the Geizhals portal for price comparison on its own website. In August 2013 heise online took over the marketing of the advertisements on Geizhals.de. As a result, the publisher decided in October 2013 to take a 24 percent stake in the price comparison company. In May 2014 Heise took over the majority in the company by increasing his stake to 75 percent. This majority has since grown to over 91 percent.

Functional principle and services

An editorially managed product database offers users the opportunity to search for specific products from the areas of hardware and software, entertainment electronics, household appliances, sports and drugstores. With the help of property filters, data sheets, test reports, price trends, wish lists, live stock levels and dealer reviews, a comprehensive and personalized search should be made possible. According to the company, only new items are displayed. Before concluding a contract, every dealer must meet certain legal and qualitative criteria, which are also checked at regular intervals.

Forum

Geizhals has been running a well-frequented forum since 2000 , which was initially intended to serve as a discussion forum for problems with dealers and products, but is now mainly dominated by the "gossip" area. In 2019 this area of the forum was closed until further notice.

metashop.at

As part of a cooperation with the Austrian Chamber of Commerce , Geizhals developed the Metashop in 2004, a rental shop system that is intended to ensure that specialist retailers have an easy entry into online trading and that offers retailers a large number of items that are already available and can be selected using a convenient GUI tool.

ISP comparison

Between 2002 and 2017, Geizhals in Austria offered an overview of Internet connections with a total price calculation for the first year and numerous filter options.

Cooperations

In order to increase its own reach, Geizhals has maintained so-called " white label " cooperations since 2004 . Your own content is displayed in the respective design of the partner site. Heise online became the first important partner in Germany. Other cooperation partners are ComputerBase , PC Games Hardware , Computec Media and winfuture.de .

bepixelung.org

The use of image material for the offered products became a problem for Geizhals, since image rights granted by manufacturers were withdrawn. To counteract this problem, the image database bepixelung.org was created in autumn 2008 , which enabled users to publish self- photographed product images on the platform until August 2017.

Mobile price comparison

Since 2011, smartphone apps (iOS, Android) have also been available for Geizhals services, which also offer additional features such as barcode scans and route functions.

Revenue generation

Geizhals is available to users free of charge. There are two models for billing with retailers:

Pay-per-click : Merchants only pay for the actual user frequency generated by Geizhals .
Pay-per-order : this only incurs costs for the retailer if a successful sale is made via Geizhals .

Part of the turnover is also generated through advertising on the website. However, this only plays a subordinate role. Geizhals only allows user-friendly advertising, and z. B. no pop-up advertising or large formats.
