Thomas de Gray, 2nd Earl de Gray (born Robinson , born December 8, 1781 , † November 14, 1859 ) was a British nobleman and politician .

Life

He was the eldest son of Thomas Robinson, 2nd Baron Grantham and Lady Mary Jemima Yorke (1757-1830), younger daughter of Philip Yorke, 2nd Earl of Hardwicke and Jemima Yorke, 2nd Marchioness Gray .

He was still a minor when he inherited his title of nobility as 3rd Baron Grantham when his father died in 1786 . In 1792 he inherited on the death of his cousin Sir Norton Robinson, 5th Baronet , whose title of nobility as Baronet , of Newby in the County of York, which had been bestowed on his grandfather in 1690.

He was at St. John's College of Cambridge University trained. After he came of age, he took his seat in the House of Lords and changed his family name from "Robinson" to "Weddell" on May 7, 1803 with royal license.

He belonged to the Tory party and was Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire from 1818 . From 1831 to 1837 he was Yeomanry aide-de-camp for King William IV and from 1837 to 1859 for Queen Victoria . From 1834 to 1835 he was First Lord of the Admiralty , from 1834 a member of the Privy Council and from 1841 to 1844 Lord Lieutenant of Ireland . In 1844 he was awarded the Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter.

When his aunt on his mother's side, Amabel Hume-Campbell, 1st Countess de Gray , died on May 4, 1833, he also inherited their titles as 2nd Earl de Gray and 6th Baron Lucas . He then changed his family name from "Weddell" to "de Gray" with a royal license from June 23, 1833.

Since his only son died childless before him, his nephew George Robinson, 2nd Earl of Ripon , inherited his titles of nobility, with the exception of the Barony of Lucas, which fell to his older daughter, Lady Anne de Gray.

Marriage and offspring

On July 20, 1805, he married Lady Henrietta Frances Cole (1784-1845), daughter of William Cole, 1st Earl of Enniskillen . He had three children with her:
