Elizabeth Butler, Duchess of Ormonde , 2nd Lady Dingwall (born Preston , born July 25, 1615 , † July 21, 1684 ) was an Anglo-Irish noblewoman .

Life

She was the only child of the Anglo-Irish courtier Richard Preston, 1st Earl of Desmond († 1628), from his marriage to Lady Elizabeth Butler († 1628), heir to Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormonde (1532-1614) .

She was thirteen years old when her parents died in quick succession in October 1628, and she inherited their property and lands. The Irish peerage her father as Earl of Desmond and Baron Dunmore were hereditary only in the male line and extinguished, its subordinate Scottish peerage as Lord Dingwall was hereditary but also in the female line, so it as second to him Lady Dingwall succeeded.

There were disputes over her mother's landed lands, which her uncle Walter Butler, 11th Earl of Ormonde (1569–1634) claimed as the closest male relative. These disputes were settled when Elizabeth married his grandson and heir, her third cousin Hon. James Butler (1610–1688), in December 1629 . He inherited the title of 12th Earl of Ormonde and 5th Earl of Ossory in 1633 , whereupon she carried the courtesy title Countess Ormonde . After her husband was promoted to 1st Marquess of Ormonde in 1642 and 1st Duke of Ormonde in 1661 , she carried the courtesy title Marchioness of Ormonde and Duchess of Ormonde .

She had seven children from their marriage:

When she died in 1684, her title of nobility fell to her grandson James Butler, 7th Earl of Ossory , the son of her second son Thomas, who died in 1680. In 1688 he inherited her husband as the 2nd Duke of Ormonde.
