The claim to the Irish Duke and Marquess titles went to his brother Charles Butler, 1st Earl of Arran , but these were not led by him during his lifetime and expired with his death in 1758. The claim to the other Irish titles went to his cousin John Butler as 15th Earl of Ormonde, 8th Earl of Ossory and 7th Viscount Thurles.

In January 1816, the title of Marquess of Ormonde was newly created for Walter Butler, 18th Earl of Ormonde . He had been raised to Baron Butler of Llanthony in the Peerage of England on January 20, 1801 and in 1795 inherited the above-mentioned titles 18th Earl of Ormonde, 11th Earl of Ossory and 10th Viscount Thurles. The marquessate and the barony were extinguished on his death. The remaining titles went to his brother James Butler as 18th Earl of Ormonde, 11th Earl of Ossory and 10th Viscount Thurles. The same was awarded on July 17, 1821 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom the title of Baron Ormonde and on October 5, 1825 in the third award of the title of Marquess of Ormonde .
