James Butler, 3rd Marquess of Ormonde

James Edward William Theobald Butler, 3rd Marquess of Ormonde , KP , PC (I) (born October 5, 1844 - October 26, 1919 ), since 1854 also Earl of Ossory , was an Irish nobleman.

family

Butler is the son of John Butler, 2nd Marquess of Ormonde and Frances Jane Paget. His father had the title "Earl of Ossory" as an additional title. When he died in 1854, James Butler inherited the title.

Butler was the last marquess to live at Kilkenny Castle . In 1904 he received Edward VII and his wife Queen Alexandra on this.

Life

Butler was Colonel of the Royal East Kent Mounted Rifles and Commanding Officer of the Royal Yacht Squadron . He was also Vice Admiral of Leinster and a member of the Privy Council of Ireland . He was awarded the Royal Crown Order of Prussia . He was installed as a knight in the Order of Saint Patrick in 1868. He operated the headquarters of the Lord Lieutenant of County Kilkenny from 1878 to 1919 .

Butler was the first patron of the Dublin Swimming Club , which was Ireland's first swimming club and was founded in 1881. He held this position until his death in 1919.

Descendants, inheritance and wealth

On February 2, 1876, he married Lady Elizabeth Harriet Grosvenor, daughter of Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster . The couple were considered the richest couple in England in the second half of the 19th century. Hugh Grosvenor gave ₤ 15,000 on Lady Elizabeth as a bride-to-be, They had two daughters: James Butler had two daughters with Lady Elizabeth.

After his death, the title was passed on to his brother James Butler, 4th Marquess of Ormonde , as he had no sons himself. His wife Elizabeth received a pension of ₤ 3,000 a year, although she inherited approximately ₤ 35,000 after the death of her father in 1899.
