Earl of Ossory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Earl of Ossory was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award

The title was bestowed on Pier Butler on February 23, 1528 . Under pressure from King Henry VIII , he had renounced his title of 8th Earl of Ormonde on February 18, 1528 . Heinrich awarded the Ormonde Earldom in 1529 to Thomas Boleyn , the father of his lover and future wife Anne Boleyn . After the Lord Chancellor Cardinal Thomas Wolsey stood up for him, Piers Butler received the Earldom Ossory as compensation. After Anne Boleyn was executed in 1536, Piers Butler also received the title Earl of Ormonde back on February 22, 1538 . The two earl titles have been linked ever since.

The title has been suspended since the death of the 19th Earl of Ossory on October 25, 1997, as it is unclear whether a line of descendants of the 2nd Earl of Ossory entitled to inheritance still exists, if not, the title would have expired.
