Thomas Butler, 6th Earl of Ossory (born July 8, 1634 in Kilkenny , † July 30, 1680 ) was an Anglo-Irish military and politician.

Life

He was born the son and heir apparent of James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde and Elizabeth Preston, 2nd Lady Dingwall at Kilkenny Castle . He spent his youth in Ireland and France.

He embarked on a military career and was promoted to lieutenant-general of the cavalry in 1661 .

In 1660 he was admitted to the Irish Privy Council . He belonged to the Tories and became in 1661 as MP for the University of Dublin in the Irish House of Commons and for Bristol in the English House of Commons voted. On August 8, 1662 he was prematurely transferred to the Irish subordinate title of his father, Earl of Ossory , by Writ of Acceleration , which he rose to the Irish House of Lords .

In 1666 he was also appointed to the English Privy Council, received the office of Gentleman of the Bedchamber and received the English title of Baron Butler , of Moore Park in the County of Hertford , on September 17, 1666 by Writ of Summons , which he also ins English House of Lords Rise.

In 1672 he was accepted as a knight in the Order of the Garter .

He entered the Royal Navy and was promoted to Vice-Admiral of the Red and in 1673 to Rear-Admiral of the Blue. In 1680 he was appointed governor of Tangier , but his death on July 30, 1680 preceded his assumption of this office.

His eldest son James Butler inherited his title of nobility as the 7th Earl of Ossory. Since Thomas died before his parents, his son James inherited them in 1684 and 1688.

Marriage and offspring

On November 17, 1659 he had married Emilia von Nassau († 1684), daughter of Ludwig von Nassau , Lord of Beverweerd, Odijk and Lek. He had five children with her:
