It was created on August 4, 1628 for Philip Stanhope, 1st Baron Stanhope of Shelford . As early as November 7, 1616, he was raised to Baron Stanhope of Shelford , in the County of Nottingham , also in the Peerage of England .

Since the eldest son of the 1st Earl, Henry Stanhope, Lord Stanhope, died before his father in 1634, his son inherited the title of 2nd Earl in 1656. Henry Stanhope's widow, Katherine Stanhope , nee Wotton, was raised to Countess of Chesterfield for life on May 29, 1660 . This title expired on her death in 1667.

When the 12th Earl died in 1952, the two titles fell to his distant relative James Stanhope , who was already 7th Earl Stanhope along with subordinate titles. When he died childless in 1967, the titles Earl of Chesterfield, Baron Stanhope of Shelford and Earl Stanhope became extinct.
