James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope

Viscount Stanhope , of Mahón in the Island of Minorca , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain .

Awarding and other titles

The title was created on April 14, 1718 for James Stanhope, 1st Baron Stanhope . He had conquered the island of Menorca for the British in 1708 and was British governor there until 1711. On July 3, 1717, he had been raised to Baron Stanhope , of Elvaston in the County of Derby . Both the barony and the Viscountcy were awarded with the special note that in the absence of their own male descendants they could also be passed on to his second cousin, John Stanhope of Elvaston, and his male descendants. On April 14, 1718 he was also elevated to Earl Stanhope . Earl Stanhope's eldest son was apparently married under the courtesy title of Viscount Mahon .

The 7th Earl also inherited the title of 13th Earl of Chesterfield from a distant relative in 1952 . When he died childless in 1967, the titles Earl Stanhope and Earl of Chesterfield expired. The Viscountcy and Barony Stanhope fell according to the special note to his distant relative William Stanhope , who already had the title of 11th Earl of Harrington , along with a subordinate title. The Viscountcy and Barony Stanhope have since been subordinate titles to the Earl of Harrington.
