Ben Mohammed Abdesselem (born June 15, 1926 in Casablanca , † 1965 ) was a French football player of Moroccan origin.

As a player in the club

In Bordeaux (1952–1955)

The 180 centimeter tall striker Abdesselem grew up in France-ruled Morocco and wore the WAC Casablanca jersey in his hometown . At the age of 26, he moved to metropolitan France in 1952 and signed a professional contract with the first division club Girondins Bordeaux . He made his debut in the top French division on September 14, 1952, when he was on the field in a 1: 3 defeat against Le Havre AC . He then became a regular player and scored his first goal on November 23 of the same year in an encounter against Olympique Nîmes , which he succeeded in the first minute. In the further course of the game, he met two more times and thus played a major role in the 3-2 success of his team. In the following time he proved his scoring qualities and finished third in the ranking of the best shooters with 22 hits during the season 1952/53; Bordeaux took the same place in the final table. This was followed by two seasons in which he continued to be successful with 14 and 15 goals respectively, although he could not build on his first year as a professional. With the team he reached the national cup final in 1955 , where they met the Lille OSC . He was called up in the final, but did not score and ultimately suffered a 2: 5 defeat. In the same year he turned his back on Bordeaux.

In Nîmes (1955–1957)

Following his departure from Bordeaux, he signed with league rivals Olympique Nîmes in 1955. There he was usually set as a regular player and contributed twelve goals in his first year. In addition, he won this season in the second cup competition Coupe Charles Drago, the only title of his career. In the 1956/57 season, however, he hardly played a role in the team and only played two games. He then ended his professional career, which had only lasted five years, in 1957 at the age of 31 after 98 first division games with 63 goals.

National team

Abdesselem was 27 years old when he was allowed to wear the shirt of the French national team for the first time on November 25, 1953 in a 1-0 win over Ireland . The friendly game, in which he did not score his own goal, was the only international match he played.

Play style

The striker was considered technically strong and had good ball handling. In addition, he was very agile. On the other hand, he also had a reputation for being frivolous and fluctuating in his level of performance.
