US Tourcoing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Union Sportive Tourcoing was a traditional French football club from Tourcoing , a town in the northern department , right on the border with Belgium .

The UST was founded in 1898 . Until it was dissolved for the first time as a result of a merger ( 1945 , see below ) and after becoming independent again in 1957, the club bore this name, but was no longer able to build on its pre-war successes and completely disappeared from the headlines (presumably final dissolution). In 1994 the Tourcoing Football Club was founded, which sees itself in the tradition of UST, but has disappeared today in the eight-division ( Championnat Interrégional de la Ligue du Nord ).

The Union Sportive league team played at Stade Albert Fromentin , which was renamed Stade Charles Van de Veegaete in 1958 ; Fromentin and Van de Veegaete were two of the founders of the association.

history

Before the First World War

After its founding, Roubaix joined the only football association until then, the Union des Sociétés Françaises de Sports Athlétiques (USFSA), which from 1898 carried out a national championship competition called Championnat de France . The footballers from the industrial area of the north dominated this competition in an impressive way until the First World War, despite tough competition in their own region, on the English Channel and in Paris. This achievement is not devalued by the fact that from 1905 there were competing associations that played their own championship - the USFSA remained the association with the largest number of members, as did most of the other traditional clubs in France (e.g. Standard AC , Racing Club de France and Club Français from Paris, which included AC Le Havre , Stade Helvétique Marseille , Olympique Lille and RC Roubaix ).

Union Sportive Tourcoing won the particularly hotly contested regional championships in the north for the first time only two years after it was founded, then again in 1909. But it wasn't only in 1910 that it not only made it into the finals, but also won the Championnat de France with a 7: 2 against Stade Helvétique Marseille (which won this title in both 1909 and 1911). At the next participation in the finals (1912), Tourcoing again finished in the semi-finals.

Between the wars

After the establishment of the uniform football association FFF (1919) and the introduction of a nationwide, professional league operation (1932), UST was no longer able to build on the "golden era" and only played a good role in the amateur field: in 1920, 1928 and 1933 it was the champion of the highest , then the second class amateur league, the Division d'Honneur du Nord (DH Nord) . But even then it was enough for the second highest division.

She was more successful in the national cup, the Coupe de France : In 1921 she only bowed in the semifinals in the extra time Olympique Paris , which was in the cup final three times between 1918 and 1921 and also won the cup once. 1922 and 1926 were the last stop in the quarterfinals for US Tourcoing.

After the Second World War

The football department of the US Tourcoing participated in the "joining of forces" in the twin town of Roubaix -Tourcoing in 1945 and was absorbed into the first division club Olympique Roubaix-Tourcoing until 1957 - whereby UST also won a share in the national championship title, at least in the eyes of the fans which this big club won in 1947.

In 1965, 1992 and 1996 US and its successor FC were again champions of DH Nord , but this was only the fourth and is now only the sixth highest league in France. In the 2010/11 season, the USFC Tourcoing , which has since been merged, plays even lower class in the amateur field, namely in the Promotion d'Honneur , but has returned to the sixth division in 2013/14 .

League affiliation and achievements

After the introduction of professional football, the US Tourcoing played in this area from 1933 to 1938, but not in Division 1 (renamed Ligue 1 since 2002 ), but only second class.
