The 19 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division after the previous season or had given up their license - voluntarily or forcibly - were eligible to participate ; this time there was only one first division relegated. There were no professional beginners this season either.

So this season the following 20 teams played for the championship of Division 2 :

Before the Second World War, there was only a direct promotion and relegation depending on the sporting result between the first and second professional division; after that, a descent to the third highest division had been introduced over a few years, but this was no longer in force. In addition, a second division could be relegated if he gave up his license or if it was revoked. Previous amateur teams, on the other hand, could only continue to move up to Division 2 for the following season if they received approval from the responsible association FFF to assume professional status.
In addition, this season there was a relegation between the worst-placed first division team who was not directly relegated and the best second division team who was not directly eligible for promotion.

Season course

Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.

This season the race for promotion was once again very close; A few weeks before the final 38th matchday, six competitors had realistic hopes of finishing one of the top three places - and the final decisions were actually made only then. Rennes with the second best defense behind Le Havre and Angers with the most powerful attack secured the places that entitle them to direct promotion, while between Valenciennes-Anzin and Béziers even the goal quotient ultimately had to be decisive in favor of the northern French. Red Star Olympique, who had been denied promotion at the end of the previous season due to several attempts to bribe opposing teams, had positioned themselves in the upper midfield of the table without being able to intervene in the promotion battle. The team from Roubaix and Tourcoing, which was only represented in the second division for the first time, was three places behind. At the end of the final rankings, Sète and CA Paris - the latter, however, now almost traditionally settled in the table basement - found two founding clubs of the professional French league, to which the team from Montpellier had joined, also not for the first time.

In the 380 encounters 1161 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 3.06 goals per game, which was the weakest average in the history of the league. As in the previous year, Valenciennes' Dutch attacker Petrus van Rhijn won the top scorer's crown, but this time "only" 32 goals. After the end of the season, no club gave up its professional status. For the following season came the relegated OSC Lille , Girondins Bordeaux and AS Troyes-Savinienne from Division 1 ; The association did not issue new professional licenses this time either, so the second division should continue to play with 20 teams.

    Relegation round

After the end of the point games, the third-placed Valenciennes-Anzin met the third from bottom of Division 1 , the Lille OSC , to determine another promoted team. After both Barragists had won a game by one goal each - Valenciennes 1-0, Lille 2-1 - a play-off was necessary because the matches were played on a neutral pitch, an extension of the second game was not planned and In addition, no away goals rule existed in the 1950s . Unlike in the previous year, in which Lille had escaped relegation thanks to the relegation, the LOSC lost to their northern French neighbors in this third meeting with 0: 4 and thus became second class for the first time in the club's history.
