Danuta Gleed Literary Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Danuta Gleed Literary Award is a Canadian literary prize that has been awarded since 1998 , each spring for the previous literary year it bears. It honors the first collection of short stories that a Canadian writer has published in English .

The honor is awarded annually by the Writers 'Union of Canada , the Canadian writers' association, and was established by John Gleed, who wanted to use this foundation to preserve the memory of his second wife, the Canadian writer Danuta Gleed and her favorite literary genre. The proceeds from Danuta Gleed's own short story collection One for the Chosen , which was published posthumously in 1997 by BuschekBooks by Frances Itani and Susan Zettell , will continue to flow into the award fund .

In 2004 the prize money increased from 5,000 to 10,000 Canadian dollars for the winner. The next two authors or short story collections will each receive $ 500. The candidate proposals must be submitted by the end of January of each award year. In May of each year, the shortlist for each year is set and presented to the press, while the prize is awarded at the beginning of June. The changing jury includes renowned Canadian writers, literary critics and publishers such as Gail Anderson-Dargatz , Robin McGrath and Hal Niedzviecki for 2012 or Douglas Glover , J. Jill Robinson and Claire Holden Rothman for 2011.

In contrast to the Canadian Journey Prize , which is also related to short stories, a short story collection by a writer and not just a debut short story is awarded here. In addition, unlike the Journey Prize, which has existed since 1989, the Danuta Gleed Literary Award is independent of the publisher.

The 2011 awardee, Ian Williams, said Canadians would be best at writing short stories: "I think Canadians do the short story better than anyone else on the planet."
