David Bezmozgis
David Bezmozgis (born June 2, 1973 in Riga , Latvian SSR ) is a Canadian writer and English language filmmaker.
Life
David Bezmozgis grew up in the Latvian Soviet Republic and in 1979 emigrated with his family to Canada via Rome . He studied English literature at McGill University and then earned an MFA from the University of Southern California in the School of Cinema-Television . Bezmozgis produced his first television documentary in 1999, LA Mohel . His first film was finished in 2008, Victoria Day , in which Mark Rendall plays the lead role. The film was first shown at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival .
His first book, Natasha and Other Stories , published in 2004, was a volume of short stories, some of which were also reprinted in The New Yorker and Harper's . In 2005 he received the Danuta Gleed Literary Award for the book . His first novel, The Free World , describes the situation of Jewish emigrants from the Soviet Union who are waiting in Italy for a visa to continue their journey. The book came out in 2011 and was nominated for the Amazon.ca First Novel Award .
