Silvia Morawetz

Silvia Morawetz (born September 11, 1954 in Gera , GDR ) is a German literary translator . She mainly translates English-language literature from the 20th and 21st centuries into German.

Life and professional activity

Silvia Morawetz initially trained as an electronics technician and then studied English , American and German at the University of Leipzig . There she was presented in 1984 with the work Problems of autobiographical writing, presented on the "autobiographical romances" by Henry Miller for Dr. phil. PhD .

After graduation, she worked as a freelance teacher, translator and interpreter and was co-editor of an art magazine in Leipzig . In 1986 she was the editor of the autobiography of the Irish writer George Moore , entitled Confessions of a Young Man , which was published in the Dieterich'schen Verlag bookstore . At the end of 1988 she moved to West Germany and settled in Heidelberg .

Morawetz has mainly translated works from the 20th and 21st centuries in English from the genres of novels, detective novels, short stories, poetry, essays, youth literature, radio plays, biographies and art history. The authors she has translated into German include the British Alain de Botton , James Kelman , Ali Smith , Peter May and David Bellos , the Americans Anne Sexton , Joyce Carol Oates , William H. Gass , Gore Vidal , Henry Miller , Lily Brett and Terry Eagleton , Canadians Emily Carr , David Bezmozgis and Mordecai Richler and New Zealander CK Stead . Together with Kristian Lutze and Werner Schmitz , she translated Harry Belafonte's autobiography My Song into German.

She is a member of the professional association of German-speaking translators (VdÜ) and from 1990 to 1997 she acted as editor and publisher of its association magazine Translate , which at that time was still called The Translator . She wrote reviews and essays for newspapers and radio.

Between 1999 and 2012 she received several working grants from the German Translation Fund (DÜF) for her work . She received further grants from the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony as well as another from the Literary Colloquium Berlin for her translations of the poems of Anne Sexton.
