David Bellos

David Bellos (born June 25, 1945 ) is a British literary scholar and translator.

Life

David Bellos was at the University of Oxford doctorate in Romance languages and had teaching responsibilities at the University of Edinburgh , University of Southampton and the University of Manchester . In 1997 he was appointed professor of Romance studies, French literature and comparative literature at Princeton University . In 2011 he wrote an introduction to translation entitled Is That a Fish in Your Ear? .

In 2005, Bellos won the translator's share in the first Man Booker International Prize awarded for his translations of works by the Albanian Ismail Kadare , whose translations into French by the bilingual Jusuf Vrioni he translated into English. He wrote an essay in 2005 about this act of indirect translation , which he actually rejected.

Bellos wrote several literary biographies, such as The Novel of the Century on Victor Hugo's work Les Misérables . He also translated La Vie mode d'emploi by Georges Perec , for which he received the Prix ​​Goncourt de la biographie in 1994 , as well as other works by Perec, Kadare, individual works by Georges Ifrah , Romain Gary , Georges Simenon , Paul Fournel , two novels by Fred Vargas and also the diary of the Holocaust victim Hélène Berr .

In 2015 he was accepted as an officer in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .
