The University of Southampton ( English : University of Southampton ) is a university in the city of Southampton on the south coast of England . It is a member of the prestigious Russell Group and is one of the leading research universities in England. In both the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the QS World University Rankings , the university is regularly among the top 100 universities in the world.

In 2020, the university ranked 11th in the global Times Higher Education's (THE) table of "Golden Age" universities for the fourth time in a row.

The university spans a total of seven campuses: Main Campus Highfield, Avenue Campus (including the humanities), National Oceanography Center (including the Center for Ocean Sciences), Southampton General Hospital (including medicine and health sciences) and Boldrewood Campus (including engineering). There is also the School of Art in Winchester and an international campus in Malaysia. The university offers more than 5000 internal accommodation in its complex in the form of various student residences. With over 23,000 students, the University of Southampton is one of the largest universities on the English south coast. The university also has a sports complex and has a sports center on campus, including fitness rooms and a swimming pool.

The University of Southampton is a major international hub for maritime research, including the Institute for Maritime Law (IML), the National Oceanography Center Southampton, the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute and Lloyd's Research Division Register belong. The Institute for Maritime Law, which is affiliated with the University's Law School, is a leading global center for research, advice and training in maritime law. The most recent Research Excellence Framework rated 100 percent of its research as global leader or internationally excellent for the research environment.

The university dates back to the Hartley Institution , founded in 1862 . This became the University College in 1902 and became an independent university in 1952 with the status of a Royal Charter . Prior to 1952, degrees were awarded by the University of London .

Boldrewood Campus

The Boldrewood Campus is currently being renovated and should be accessible again towards the end of 2015. Another department for marine and engineering sciences will be built. The Boldrewood Campus is less than a five-minute walk from the Highfield Campus.

Southampton Teaching Hospital

Southampton General Hospital is an official teaching and research hospital run by the University of Southampton in cooperation with the NHS.

There are currently five different research departments in the hospital:

Winchester School of Art

Founded in 1960, the Winchester School of Art was not officially incorporated into the University of Southampton until the 1990s.

Malaysia campus

In October 2012, the university's first campus outside the UK opened in Malaysia. The facilities are currently being expanded and expanded, but the main focus there is on engineering.

National Oceanography Center

The National Oceanography Center was built in 1994. The institute was built by the university in conjunction with the British Natural Environment Research Council for research purposes.

Dormitories

The various student residences are located in and around the campuses. The main student residences include Glen Eyre, Wessex Lane, Mayflower Hall, Archers Road, Bencraft Hall, Highfields Hall, Shaftesbury Avenue and Gower Building and (since winter semester 2015) City Gateway.

The Chilworth Manor property is also run as part of the university
