Barry Cunliffe
Sir Barrington Windsor Cunliffe CBE , known as Barry Cunliffe (born December 10, 1939 ), is a British archaeologist .
Life
After Cunliffe had studied archeology and anthropology at Cambridge University , he became a lecturer at Bristol University in 1963 . In 1966, unusually young, he became professor of archeology at the University of Southampton . From 1972 to 2007 he was Professor of European Archeology at Oxford University .
Well known are his excavations of the Roman Palace at Fishbourne , Sussex . He is also a recognized authority in the field of Celtic research.
From 1976 to 1979 he was President of the Council for British Archeology . In 1979 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy . He has been a member of the Ancient Monuments Advisory Committee ( English Heritage ) since 1984 and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Discovery Program (Ireland) since 1991. In 1989 he was accepted as a full member of the Academia Europaea . In 1995 he became an honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy . In June 2006 he was beaten to the Knight Bachelor .
