Peter May (born December 20, 1951 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish writer.

Life

May was already writing during his school days and soon afterwards worked as a journalist for various newspapers and magazines; u. a. for the Scotsman and the Evening Times (Glasgow). In 1972 he won the Fraser Award and was named "Scotland's Young Journalist of the Year".

In addition to his journalistic work, he also wrote fiction texts over the years and in 1977 May made his successful debut with his novel The Reporter . With the filming of this work by the BBC , May came to television and worked there successfully as a screenwriter until 1996 . While doing this work he met the author Janice Hally there and married her in 1990.

In 1996 May gave up his work on television and from then on devoted himself only to his literary works.

Currently (2011) he lives with his wife alternately in Scotland and France.

With Enzo Macleod, May invented a protagonist who, as a Scot, lived for a long time in France and earned his living there as a lecturer. Almost by the way, however, he repeatedly comes across unsolved criminal cases. T. knows how to solve in an unusual way.

Another cycle of novels is set in China. May came up with the idea on several trips to and through China. Police officer Li Yan is investigating there with the help of the American Margaret Campbell.

May's latest series was created in 2011 under the name "The Blackhouse". There Fin Macleod investigates on the Isle of Lewis ( Outer Hebrides ). According to May's own statements, this series is designed as a trilogy . The German edition has been published by Zsolnay / Hanser since the second volume in the series. According to the FAZ, the “Lewis Trilogy” sold more than a million copies in Scotland .
