The German Translation Fund is a non-profit association for the promotion of literary translators into German. It was founded in 1997 in Berlin to develop quality-oriented and nationwide effective translator funding from public and private funds. The seat of the association is the Literary Colloquium Berlin ; The translator Rosemarie Tietze was the chairperson from its inception until 2009 .
The Executive Board currently consists of Thomas Brovot (Chairman), Ulrich Blumenbach and Marie Luise Knott .
Its founding members are the following associations and institutions active in promoting literature:
- German Academy for Language and Poetry
- German Literature Fund
- European College of Translators (EÜK) in Straelen
- Circle of Friends for the Promotion of Literary and Scientific Translations
- Cultural work of German writers
- Literary Colloquium Berlin
- Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works , VdÜ
- Collecting Society Wort (VG Wort)
The German Translation Fund is funded by the Federal Cultural Foundation , the State Cultural Foundation , the Foreign Office and the Robert Bosch Foundation . The funds are primarily used to award grants to translators. In addition to work, travel and further training grants , this also includes mentoring grants , which provide the fellow with an experienced colleague, and multi-week residency grants for international translation centers such as the European Translators' College in Straelen , the Collège International des Traducteurs Littéraires in Arles (France) and the Baltic Center for Writers and Translators in Visby (Sweden).
In addition, the German Translation Fund is developing new forms of exchange of experience and the transfer of knowledge: it offers basic seminars , thematic workshops , "try it out" seminars and the promotion of young talent (" Hieronymus program"). With the ViceVersa program , together with the Robert Bosch Stiftung, a program has been launched which, in the form of bilingual workshops, provides international advanced training and the linguistic and cultural exchange of literary translators.
The August Wilhelm von Schlegel Visiting Professorship for the Poetics of Translation was established in 2007 for the tenth anniversary of the German Translators' Fund with the help of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media at the Peter Szondi Institute for General and Comparative Literature at the Free University of Berlin . It is the first professorship for the poetics of translation in German-speaking countries and is awarded annually in the winter semester to people who have made remarkable translations in the German-speaking literary public.

Honors
Maja Pflug, Stuttgart, suggested the establishment of associations such as the Weltlesebühne , a loose network of literary translators from various German-speaking cities, or drama panorama , a "forum for translation and theater". Together with others, she developed training formats such as "Über Kreuz", a workshop for editors and translators, "ViceVersa", the bilingual workshops, or the Hieronymus program for young translators, which are important for the professional development of such professions. The promotion of translator awards, e.g. Other activities of her include the Karl Dedecius Prize and the Tarabya Prize, the financing of work stays in the country of the source or target language and the support of book and film projects on literary translation. In recognition of her work, the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works , VdÜ, awarded her its translator's mark in 2017 , a small work of art created every year. This award also went to the Robert Bosch Foundation , where she promotes translated literature on a full-time basis.
