The Journey Prize is a Canadian literary prize that has existed since 1989 and is awarded annually by the publishing house McClelland and Stewart , Toronto , and the Writers' Trust of Canada for the best short story by an aspiring writer published in a Canadian literary magazine. The award was suggested by James A. Michener , who provided his Canadian income from his novel Journey (1988) and thus coined the name of the award.

The Journey Prize, worth 10,000 Canadian dollars, is the most important financial award given in Canada to an ambitious writer for a short story or an excerpt of a novel who is in the process of writing.

The Journey Prize also publishes an annual anthology , The Journey Prize Stories , in which all nominated short stories and excerpts are republished by McClelland and Stewart and which themselves enjoy a certain reception. In addition, McClelland & Stewart will award a prize of Canadian dollars 2,000 to the literary magazine that published the literary contribution first and submitted it to the competition. Two more of the finalists will each receive $ 1,000. The jury consists of three independent members; the award will be presented at the Writers' Trust Awards event .

The 2000 laureate , Timothy Taylor , was the first writer to shortlist three short stories in one year.

In contrast to the Journey Prize, the Danuta Gleed Literary Award , which has existed since 1998, honors the best short story collection by an author and not just the debut of a short story. In addition, the Danuta Gleed Literary Award is independent of the publisher.
