- February 24 - Ayatollah Khomeini surrenders $ 3 million for killing the author of The Satanic Verses, Salman Rushdie , following a fatwa .
- Toronto / Canada : The Journey Prize is a Canadian literary prize that has been in existence since 1989 and is awarded annually by the publishing house McClelland and Stewart , Toronto, and the Writers' Trust of Canada for the best short story by an aspiring writer in a Canadian literary magazine has been published. The award was suggested by James A. Michener , who made his Canadian income from his novel Journey (1988) available and thus coined the name of the award. The Journey Prize, worth 10,000 Canadian dollars, is the most important financial award given in Canada to an ambitious writer for a short story or an excerpt of a novel who is in the process of writing.
