Sterjo Spasse ( Macedonian Стерјо Спасе ; * 1914 in Gollomboç on Lake Prespa , † 1989 in Tirana ) was an Albanian writer. Spasse comes from the Macedonian minority in Albania , but most of his work is in Albanian.

Life

At the age of just under 20, Spasse wrote his best-known work, the novella Nga jeta në jetë. Pse? (From life to life. Why?) . It tells the story of a young intellectual who returns to his home village after graduating. The hero no longer feels able to live according to the traditional values ​​of the archaic village community (up to an arranged marriage with a peasant girl), but he also does not find the strength to rebel against it. This contradiction ultimately drives him to suicide.

Spasse himself was later married for fifty years to Nikolina, a simple woman from his home village, who is said to have even been illiterate as a young girl. They had three children together.

After the Second World War , Spasse also wrote a few novels, as well as short stories and children's stories. In the years shortly before and shortly after the war he worked as a teacher. In the early 1950s he went to Tirana with his family . In 1975, Sterjo Spasse was able to leave Communist Albania, which was then isolated from the outside world, and undertake a major trip to neighboring Yugoslavia, which he processed in his "Letters to my grandson Arian in Tirana. From Macedonia and Kosovo " .

Some of his books, especially the novella "Pse?" belong to the canon of literature read in Albanian schools. Since the 1960s, the author's works have been published in German, Russian or French translation, making them accessible to a wider audience.
