Timothy Findley
Timothy Irving Frederick Findley , OC , O.Ont (born October 30, 1930 in Toronto , Ontario , † June 20, 2002 in Brignoles , France ) was a Canadian writer .
life and work
His work includes novels , short stories and plays , the recurring themes of which are mainly madness , loneliness , violence and abuse of power . In addition to the most important literary prizes in his home country Canada, he received several honorary doctorates and was named Chevalier de l ' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in his adopted home France in 1996 .
Findley was briefly married to actress Janet Reid, but the marriage was annulled very soon after the wedding, the reason being probably due to Findley's homosexuality . Shortly after the cancellation, Findley moved in with the Canadian writer William Whitehead, with whom he lived for 35 years until his death.
Findley initially devoted himself to acting and met the British actor Alec Guinness in 1953 , who convinced him to study acting , whereupon he went to the London Central School of Speech and Drama and there a. a. the actress Ruth Gordon and the writer and playwright Thornton Wilder met. These two in turn encouraged him to perfect his writing skills. From the beginning of the sixties he devoted himself professionally to writing. His first two novels were, because they were rejected by Canadian publishers, published in Great Britain; his third novel "The Wars" made him famous overnight in 1977 . After receiving the Canadian Governor General's Award for Fiction for it, the novel became the basis of a literary film adaptation in 1981 .
