Governor General's Award for Fiction
The Governor General's Award for Fiction ( French Prix du Gouverneur général pour romans et nouvelles ) is Canada's most prestigious literary award . It is awarded for outstanding and important fictional prose texts .
history
The Governor General's Awards for Fiction were initiated in 1936 by Governor General Lord Tweedsmuir . With this award, the multi-part Governor General's Awards began. The first recipient of the Governor General's Awards for Fiction was Bertram Brooker ( Think of the Earth , 1936)
Initially, the winners were selected by the Canadian Authors' Association , and in 1944 an Awards Board was formed for this purpose . Until 1959, the prize went exclusively to English-language works, including translations of books by Francophone authors: Philippe Panneton's Thirty Acres (1940), Gabrielle Roy's The Tin Flute (1947), Germaine Guèvremont's The Outlander (1950). Since 1959, the award has been given in both English and French. Since 1979, a shortlist with three to six nominated works has been published in advance of the award ceremony . The prize money awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts (Conseil des arts du Canada) has increased over the years from 1,000 CAD (1959) to 25,000 CAD (2007) per winning book. In addition, the award winners' publishers have received CAD 3,000 each to promote the book.
