Leon Rooke CM (born September 11, 1934 in Roanoke Rapids , North Carolina , United States ) is a Canadian writer of American origin.

Life

Born in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Leon Rooke studied at the University of North Carolina from 1955 to 1962, with his studies interrupted by his two years military service in Alaska (1958-1960). Rooke moved to Canada in 1969 , where he now lives in Toronto . In 1983 he won the Governor General's Award for Fiction for his best-known novel, Shakespeare's Dog .

Leon Rooke was a co-founder of the 1989 Eden Mills Writers' Festival . In 2002 he honored The Stone Angel by Margaret Laurence in the then edition of Canada Reads. In 2007 he was appointed Member of the Order of Canada .

To this day, his works have been translated into French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch - but not into German.
