- Vancouver / Canada : The later Lieutenant Governor's Award for Literary Excellence experienced its first developments in the spring of 2002. Led by the experienced and multiple award-winning author Carol Shields , a group of renowned writers from British Columbia met the then provincial governor of British Columbia ( Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia ), the Honorable Iona Campagnolo , to create a special provincial literary award. Inspired by Carol Shields, this meeting resulted in the establishment of the Lieutenant Governor's Award for Literary Excellence , which, like all other seven literary prizes of the BC Book Prizes since 2004, has been awarded in April each year.
