Frances "Fran" Walsh , MNZM (born January 10, 1959 in Wellington ) is a New Zealand screenwriter .

She studied English literature at Victoria University of Wellington . Shortly after graduating, she began her career as a screenwriter. Since 1987 she has been in a relationship with the New Zealand director Peter Jackson . The couple has two children, Katie and Billy. Walsh worked on most of the scripts for the Jackson films. She was also involved as a producer on some of these films.

Walsh wrote the script for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy with Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens . She is also the co-writer of several movie songs, such as Gollum's Song and Into the West . Fran Walsh co-produced the film trilogy and directed some scenes. The cries of the Nazgûl were computerized by Walsh.

In the bonus material of the film trilogy, Walsh refrained from interviews, images and video clips in order to protect her privacy. She only contributed to the audio commentary.

After writing the screenplay for the New Zealand remake of King Kong , she adapted Alice Sebold's novel In My Heaven . The film was released internationally in 2009 under the name The Lovely Bones .

Together with Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens, Walsh also created the script adaptation of the novel The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien .
