Stephan Ley

Stephan Ley (born November 29, 1867 in Bonn ; † May 30, 1964 in Bonn) was a German teacher , Beethoven researcher and music writer.

Life

Ley visited in Bonn, the Royal Grammar School (now the Beethoven-Gymnasium ) and studied at the University of Classical Philology , German and history . He then worked as a grammar school teacher in Emmerich and Essen and finally became director of the municipal grammar school in Boppard (today the Kant grammar school ). Here he aroused the displeasure of the French occupation forces and was expelled. He then returned to school and taught at high schools in Wipperfürth ( Oberbergischer Kreis ) and Linz am Rhein . After retiring in 1932 , he returned to his hometown.

Ley published six highly regarded books and a total of 85 essays on Ludwig van Beethoven . For his great services to Beethoven research, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, by the then Federal President Theodor Heuss in 1958 . Ley's most important legacy is an extensive collection of the surviving pictorial evidence. It is now in the Beethoven House in Bonn .

The scientist last lived at Meckenheimer Chaussee 153. He found his final resting place in the old cemetery in Bonn .
