Alice Sebold grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia , graduated from Great Valley High School in Malvern Pennsylvania in 1980 and then went to Syracuse University . As an eighteen-year-old freshman, she was attacked, beaten, and brutally raped in a park one day. When she returned to her college dormitory, a security guard alerted emergency medical services. Sebold had to recover at home for several months before daring to return to university and continue studying. A few months later, while walking on campus, she recognized her rapist and arranged for him to be arrested.

She moved to the University of Houston in Texas and then moved to Manhattan for ten years , where she kept herself afloat with several waitress jobs while she tried to get her writing career off the ground. She used heroin for two years but claims never to have been addicted.

She published her first book in 1999. It is based on the experience of her rape. The title lucky (original title: Lucky ) goes back to the fact that a police officer told her after the incident that she was still lucky because she had not been killed because a short time before her, another girl had also been abused in the same park and been killed afterwards.

In November 2001, Alice Sebold married Glen David Gold .

In her novel In my Heaven (original title: The Lovely Bones ) from 2002, she describes the hunt for a rapist from the perspective of the 14-year-old raped and murdered Susie Salmon, who has arrived in a realm between life and death. From this intermediate realm, she looks down on her desperate family, follows the rapist's further life and remembers her short life. The novel was a surprise success in the USA and was filmed in an elaborate manner in 2009 by director Peter Jackson . The German theatrical release for In my Heaven was February 18, 2010.
