Career

Carey began to write out of boredom while she was still in high school, and the decision to work as a professional writer was made during an internship in a London bookstore. In 2001 her first novel, Kushiel's Dart of her trilogy Kushiel’s Legacy , was published, with which she won the Locus Award for best debut novel. The Kushiel series is set against the backdrop of the European Renaissance- inspired world of Terre d'Ange. The main character is the courtesan Phèdre, who can experience pleasure through pain. Because of the depiction of sadomasochistic scenes, the books are also called erotic novels, the author herself sees them as fantasy novels with a strong erotic influence. The Imriel trilogy continues the plot of the first three novels, but from the perspective of a different protagonist. The following Moirin series takes place around a hundred years after the last novel in the same world, but tells a new story without sadomasochistic elements.

Her Sundering series, which so far consists of two novels, is based on the Tolkien universe . The single novel Santa Oliva was originally supposed to be published under a pseudonym and is set in an America of the near future. Their latest release is the urban fantasy trilogy Agent of Hel .

Carey's novels have been translated into eight different languages so far, with an emphasis on Kushiel's Legacy .
