Darker than the Night (English: A Darkness More Than Night) is the tenth novel by the American crime novelist Michael Connelly . It is the seventh book in the Harry Bosch series, published in 2001.

action

Harry Bosch is the main witness in the murder trial against film producer David Storey. Along with a lot of circumstantial evidence, the prosecution only has the testimony of Harry Bosch, whom Storey had openly boasted to that "they will never catch him." There is no sound recording, no witnesses, only Bosch's testimony for this cheeky admission.

At the same time, former FBI profiler Terry McCaleb is being asked by Jaye Winston of the LASD (Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department) to look into the murder of Edward Gunn. McCaleb notes that the crime scene looks like a scene from a picture by Hieronymus Bosch . When he then finds out that Harry Bosch has been pursuing Edward Gunn for murder for a long time and that he was in contact with him on the eve of his death, he actually sees more and more Harry Bosch as the likely murderer of Gunn.

When, in the middle of the trial against Storey, the reporter Jack McEvoy receives information about this suspicion against Bosch, Harry Bosch realizes that someone is trying to attribute the murder of Edward Gunn to him. He crosses over to the island of Catalina off Los Angeles, where Terry McCaleb lives, and confronts him. They go through the suspicions that point to Bosch as a murderer and discover that the defense of David Storey is trying to frame Bosch for the murder of Gunn.

In truth, the private detective and ex-cop Rudy "Valentino" Tafero hired by defense attorney J. Reason Fowkkes is Gunn's murderer. When Terry McCaleb begins to find out the true events, Tafero attacks him aboard his boat, trying to murder him in a manner similar to how he killed Gunn. However, Bosch gets on Caleb's boat, incapacitates Tafero and just barely saves McCaleb's life. Tafero makes a deal during interrogation by police: he provides evidence that David Storey was behind the intent to impose a murder on Bosch.

reception

Kirkus Reviews draws the conclusion of his review that the book is "an eerily cool tour-de-force". The Los Angeles Times finds that McCaleb and Bosch's clash results in an electrifying novel that gets your adrenaline pumping. The Krimicouch finds it interesting that a European painting is used as a clue in an American detective novel: “Connelly draws a clear parallel between the conditions in Moloch LA and the representation of the world by Hieronymus Bosch.” The reviewer also states: “You notice it the exciting and artfully constructed thriller that Connelly worked as a police reporter in LA for years ”.
