Skjern Å National Park

Landscape at Skjern Å

The Skjern Å National Park was a planned large Danish reserve in the Midtjylland region . The Ramsar wetlands along Denmark's longest river Skjern Å should be designated a national park.

The initiative to establish a national park goes back to Troels Lund Poulsen ( Venstre ), who made this proposal in 2008. The Ramsar areas in the southern part of the Ringkøbing Fjord (including the Tipperne and Værnängene bird sanctuary) formed the basis for the landscape. On July 1, 2011, the Folketing decided to initiate an expulsion procedure.

However, the municipality of Ringkøbing-Skjern rejected the national parks. The Danish People's Party supported them. On March 23, 2012, the parties in the Folketing gave up their plan to push ahead with the establishment of Skjern Å National Park.
