The Skjern Å is the richest river in Jutland and also in Denmark . It rises 12 km west of Horsens in the Tinnet Krat nature reserve . Shortly after the source, it flows through two small lakes near the Nedergård Skov (forest). After about 94 kilometers in a westerly direction, the river flows into the Ringkøbing Fjord near Skjern , a lagoon on the west coast of the peninsula. The Ringkøbing Fjord is connected to the open North Sea by a lake at Hvide Sande .

Two kilometers west-southwest of the source of Skjern Å rises the Gudenå , Denmark's longest river, which flows mainly northwards at Randers to the east into the Kattegat .
