Skjern is a town in the Danish region of Midtjylland with 7843 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) about 7 kilometers east of Ringkøbing Fjord in the municipality of Ringkøbing-Skjern . The city is named after the river Skjern Å , which runs south of the city. It is the second largest town in the municipality after Ringkøbing and Denmark's youngest købstad since 1958 . Skjern's neighboring town is Tarm, four kilometers away .

Administrative history

Skjern was the main town of the former Skjern municipality . Other places in the former municipality were Borris , Stauning , Astrup , Rækker Mølle , Sædding , Dejbjerg-Moor , Hanning , Bølling , Finderup and Faster. The former neighboring communities were Aaskov Kommune to the east, Videbæk Kommune and Ringkøbing Kommune to the north and Egvad Kommune to the south. They have all belonged to the municipality of Ringkøbing-Skjern since the municipal reform in early 2007 . In 2006, a merger with the neighboring town of Tarm was also under discussion.

Sports

In addition to Skjern Å, the city is also known for its handball team Skjern Håndbold , which plays in Denmark's top handball league. Skjern won the championship in the 1998/99 season immediately after the team rose. No other team has succeeded in this so far. The Danish national team Anders Eggert , Michael V. Knudsen, Lars Møller Madsen and Jesper Jensen played for Skjern Håndbold . In 2016 the German ex-national player Matthias Flohr was part of the team.

Every spring, Skjern's marathon “Skjern Å Running Challenge” runs across the Kong Hans Bro bridge . According to legend, King Hans drowned in the Skjern Å river. He probably contracted pneumonia from the cold water , from which he died.

Known residents

  • Piet Hein (1905–1996) had a drawing room here, in which many of his well-known designs were created.
