Troels Lund Poulsen (born March 30, 1976 in Vejle ) is a Danish politician of the Venstre , and was Minister for Commerce and Growth from 2015 to 2019.

Life and work

Lund Poulsen grew up as the son of an employee and a primary school teacher in Tørring in eastern central Jutland. After he had obtained the general university entrance qualification in 1995, he began studying history at the University of Copenhagen and at the same time worked until 1997 as political secretary in the office of the Venstre faction in Christiansborg . In 1998 he became press spokesman for the company responsible for planning and building the new Ørestad district in Copenhagen . He gave up this job after moving into the Folketing. In 2005 he took over a farm about 50 kilometers outside of Copenhagen. From 2006 to 2007 the politician was a member of the board of the Danish National Bank . Lund Poulsen was in a relationship with the later Danish Minister for Health and Elderly, Sophie Løhde between 2008 and 2013 and lived with her on his farm near Tølløse .

Political career

In 1992 Lund Poulsen joined his party's youth organization, Venstres Ungdom , and was chairman of the local association in his home municipality in 1993 and 1994. In 1997 he became chairman of the general association and held this post until 1999. As a result, he also became a member of the party presidium of Venstre, to which he has been a member with an interruption from 2002 to 2006 since then. In the 2001 Folketing election he was elected for the first time as a member of the Folketing . Between 2001 and 2006 he was the equality and foreign policy spokesman for Venstre. In the latter position he campaigned for Denmark to participate in the 2003 invasion of Iraq .

After Lund Poulsen was parliamentary group spokesman between 2006 and 2007, he was appointed Environment Minister in his third government on November 23, 2007 by Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen . He also held this ministerial office in the subsequent government of Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen .

As part of a government reshuffle, Løkke appointed him on February 23, 2010 to succeed Kristian Jensen as Minister of Taxation . Lund Poulsen held this ministerial office until March 8, 2011. During his tenure as Minister of Taxation , the fat tax , which came into force on October 1, 2011, was passed. Lund Poulsen also made headlines with a Rolex wristwatch that he wore privately and in professional contexts. He had received this watch as a present from a sheikh in spring 2010 on a trip to the Middle East. After this became known, he returned the watch.

In another cabinet reshuffle, Lund Poulsen was appointed Minister of Education on March 8, 2011 as the successor to the resigned Tina Nedergaard , while Peter Christensen was his successor as Minister of Taxation. The government was voted out of office seven months later. Then Lund Poulsen took over the post of Venstre spokesman for defense policy. After Løkke took over government again in 2015, Lund Poulsen took up the post of Minister for Trade and Growth.

Central role in the tax scandal

In 2015, Lund Poulsen was reprimanded by the parliamentary auditors of the Folketing for his role in the tax scandal surrounding Helle Thorning-Schmidt . In the 2011 pre-election campaign, confidential data from the then chairman of the Social Democrats and her husband from the tax authorities reached the press. In retrospect, neither Thorning nor her husband were found to have violated the rules. The opposition at the time interpreted the publication of the data as a campaign maneuver by Venstres and suspected Lund Poulsen of having ordered the publication. However, this could never be proven to him. However, witnesses said Lund Poulsen had spread rumors that Thornings husband was gay or bisexual.
