Ørestad on the island of Amager is the youngest part of the Danish municipality of Copenhagen . The nearby Oresund gave it its name . The district has been a planned city since 1992 . Ørestad is divided into the four residential areas Ørestad Nord , Amager Fælled kvarteret , Ørestad City and Ørestad Syd as well as the nature reserve Kalvebod Fælled . The district extends in north-south direction for around 5 km with an approximate width of 600 m (310 hectares ). The municipality of Tårnby connects to the south .

In the northern part is the new Copenhagen Concert Hall (DR Koncerthuset), built according to plans by the French architect Jean Nouvel and opened in January 2009. There is also a campus of the University of Copenhagen ( Søndre Campus ), the IT Universitetet and the library of the Faculty of Humanities. Further south in the Ørestad City district is the Bella Center , where the UN climate conference took place in Copenhagen from December 7th to 18th, 2009 , the Bella Sky Hotel and the Field's shopping center , which it claims to be the largest in Scandinavia. Created by the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels , there are also three other projects in the immediate vicinity: the VM House , Mountain Dwelling and the 8 House . In the district of Ørestad Syd is the Royal Arena , a roofed multifunctional arena for sports and cultural events. The Pinseskoven nature reserve connects to the south . Kalvebod Fælled , which was originally also designated as a nature reserve, is now half part of the district.

It will take 20 to 30 years for Ørestad to be completely completed; apartments for 20,000 residents are planned. It is likely that the same number of people will visit Ørestaden for studies or training. In total, the district should offer 60,000 jobs.

The Ørestadsselskab (Ørestad Society) was founded on March 11, 1993 to develop the district , whose main task is to build the infrastructure . To do this, it sells the land to investors in order to finance the construction of the infrastructure with the proceeds. The company is wholly owned by the public sector (55% Copenhagen municipality, 45% Danish state). The cost of building the infrastructure is 1.3 billion DKK (around 175 million euros).

A key feature of Ørestad's district development was the fact that the transport infrastructure was built in Denmark for the first time before residential construction began: The construction of the metro is closely linked to Ørestad . It connects Ørestad train station with Copenhagen city center. As a stop on the Øresund connection , Ørestad is on the route from Copenhagen to Kastrup Airport and on to Sweden . The railway line runs parallel to European route 20 across the Öresund.
